St. Michael School’s Mindful Mustangs Mental Health Group, comprising 15 intermediate students in Fitzroy Harbour, was formed to promote mental health initiatives in a supportive school environment.
Led by the grade 7 and 8 students and supported by their teachers and a mental health worker, the Mindful Mustangs galvanized the school community with initiatives promoting joy and connection.
The school implemented several initiatives to encourage students to build a sense of connection. These initiatives include posting body break stickers in the hallways, creating friendship bracelets, and organizing a winter play day with outdoor games and activities for the entire school in March. The school successfully fostered a culture of togetherness, focusing on promoting community, joy, and wellness among classmates.
Their mental health advocacy efforts earned a $2,000 grant from Desjardins Insurance, further fueling their passion to make an impact.
As the school year drew to an end, the Mindful Mustangs planned a year-end celebration and looked back on their achievements with pride, knowing they had made a lasting difference in promoting wellness at their school.
