In today’s fast-evolving educational landscape, St. Stephen School took a significant step to promote inclusivity and engage young voices in important conversations. Led by teachers Jessica Hodgins, Alex MacDonnell, and Melissa Gillespie, the school’s Equity Committee has created the Equi-Talks Podcast: Stallions Shaping Equity — a platform where Grade 6 students discussed topics that matter, inspired empathy, and facilitated a culture of understanding within the school.
The Power of Student Voices
The podcast began with the idea of encouraging dialogue around equity, inclusion, and respect. When Melissa Gillespie suggested creating a podcast, the response from the Grade 6 students was immediate and enthusiastic. Seventeen students from three different classes readily joined, eager to share their perspectives on issues close to their hearts.
In a cozy, dimly lit room at the school, students gather weekly to record episodes that align with the OCSB Days of Significance calendar, ensuring the discussions are both relevant and meaningful. Topics range from bullying and mental health to celebrating exceptionalities and differences, all of which resonate with the students and promote essential skills in Deep Learning.
The Podcasting Journey
Creating each episode is a collaborative effort. During lunch breaks, students and educators meet to share open, honest conversations about topics that impact their lives and communities. These dialogues are enriching not only for the students but also for their teachers, who witness the students’ growth as they express empathy, curiosity, and insight. Educator Melissa Gillespie carefully edits each conversation into accessible 15-20 minute episodes, which are shared online to invite parents and the community to engage with the podcast and the school’s vision.
Equi-Talks doesn’t just give students a voice; it creates a safe, nurturing environment where they can assume meaningful leadership roles and prepare for high school. Through their participation, these Grade 6 students learn to communicate thoughtfully and confidently while building a stronger, more inclusive community.
An Inspirational Model for Inclusive Education
The Equi-Talks podcast at St. Stephen School stands as a model for how innovative approaches can deepen learning, promote inclusivity, and engage the community. This initiative empowers students to lead discussions on equity, creates a welcoming space for all voices, and sets a powerful example for educators everywhere. It demonstrated that meaningful conversations can shape a brighter, more inclusive future for all.
