We foster innovation to create Deep Learning so that all can realize their full potential.
We strive to discover creative approaches to achieving our goals. Unique programs and challenging projects played a key role in fostering student engagement across all grade levels.
Deep Learning: Leading with Innovation
At the Ottawa Catholic School Board, we’re not just participants in the global Deep Learning movement; we’re at the forefront. Every one of our schools is dedicated to nurturing students’ abilities to think creatively and connect meaningfully with the world around them. This past year, we’ve intensified our Deep Learning initiatives at the secondary level, where we launched a new Vice-Principal network aimed at cultivating leadership. This network, along with our vibrant cross-curricular projects like exploring the concept of “hope,” has sparked inspiration across the system. We’re proud to continue leading Canada’s involvement in the global New Pedagogies for Deep Learning partnership, further enriching our educational landscape with innovative learning modules and international collaborations.
Personalized Learning: Crafting Unique Educational Experiences
Our commitment to personalized education has never been stronger. From our two dynamic virtual schools—Blessed Carlo Elementary and St. Josephine High—to our Home Personalized Experience (HOPE) program, we’re providing tailored educational pathways that respect family dynamics and individual learning needs. Our virtual schools are thriving communities where students enjoy a rich selection of extracurriculars, ensuring they feel connected and valued. Meanwhile, the HOPE program bridges home-schooling and traditional education, allowing families to customize their educational experience, particularly in subjects like French and Math, enhancing both academic and social growth.
Dual Credit Programs: Smoothing the Path from High School to Higher Education
Our School-College-Work Initiative has expanded, embracing not just college pathways but university ones as well. Through our Dual Credit University Pathway program, we’re breaking down barriers to higher education by partnering with universities like Trent, Carleton, and Ottawa U. This program allows students to experience university-level courses alongside their high school studies, providing a glimpse into future academic and career opportunities. Supported by dedicated dual credit teachers, our students are learning to navigate and thrive within the university environment.
Skilled Trades Academy: Building Futures
The launch of the OCSB Elite Skilled Trades Academy marks a significant milestone in our commitment to hands-on learning. Housed at St. Paul High School, the Academy offers students a streamlined path to skilled trades like Carpentry and Brick and Stone Masonry apprenticeships. By partnering with Algonquin College, we’re able to offer intensive, industry-standard training that counts toward both high school and college credits, as well as paid apprenticeship hours. This blend of academic and practical learning ensures our students are ready to graduate with their peers and are well on their way to successful careers.
Social Entrepreneurs Program: Empowering Tomorrow’s Changemakers
Our Social Entrepreneurs Program (SEP) continues to flourish, empowering over 980 students to engage with real-world issues through entrepreneurship. This K-12 initiative partners students with business mentors to create and market products, turning profits into support for their chosen charities. Through SEP, students are not only learning about business fundamentals but are also making a tangible impact on social issues, proving that even the youngest among us can be catalysts for change.
Embracing AI: Shaping the Future of Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is set to transform every aspect of society, including education. This year, we proactively embraced AI to enhance learning and operational efficiency across our board. We developed OCSB AI Guiding Principles in student-friendly language to ensure clarity and alignment in our approach. We launched a comprehensive AI toolkit for staff, updated our digital citizenship curriculum to include AI literacy, and revised our assessment protocols to tackle new challenges like AI-driven plagiarism. By integrating AI into our educational strategy, we’re preparing our students to excel in a rapidly evolving digital world.
